‘Twas the Night Before Football – A 2017 Atlanta Falcons Poem

 By Cory Woodroof

‘Twas the night before football, when all through the land.

Not a Falcon was being fast or physical; not even Coach Dan.

Dirty Bird hopes were up high, there joy to a twee,

Surely this would be the season they’d stop the joking about 28-3. Continue reading

We Rise Again

By Peter Thomas

For many long-time Southerners and Atlantans, Super Bowl LI wasn’t simply crushing in its revival of words like “choke” and “soft” to describe Atlanta sports teams.

The larger hurt was to re-open that wound of insecurity that we as Southerners all share: that we are not quite winners on the professional football field, that our destiny is to be second-class fans in a second-tier city. Continue reading

Dr. StrangeBird, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Live with 28-3

By Cory Woodroof

There’s no use in trying to talk about it, trying to make sense with it, trying to come to peace with it, trying to banish it away like an otherworldly monster terrorizing your small town.

The Atlanta Falcons, yes, our guys, blew a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl to the most hated sports franchise of all time, in front of everybody, and there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it. Continue reading

Cory’s Magic Falcons Mailbag: Hageman, Inception, Inquiries for Money

By Cory Woodroof

Welcome to Cory’s Magic Falcons Mailbag – a weekly Falcons mailbag where Rise Up Readers send questions in to Cory, and he answers them with stunning bravado, and also in non-Tweet length. The bag itself was woven by the Falcon Tamers of Valdosta in the caves of the Flowery Branch Mountains and was discovered during the construction of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Continue reading

Devonta Freeman Earned Every Penny

By Cory Woodroof

Devonta Freeman earned every penny.

The Falcons’ 2014 round pick, the ferocious ball carrier, the down-to-Earth bulldozer who came out swinging at Jerryworld and never looked back – Freeman got paid today, and he earned every cent of it.

The Falcons signed the RB Freeman to a five-year extension, worth $41 million dollars (including $22 million of it guaranteed as he signed the dotted line). The extension comes just as Freeman prepares to head to Miami for a preseason matchup against the Dolphins. Continue reading

On the Brink of a New Falcons Season: For Us, For Them, For 28-3

By Cory Woodroof

Flash-forward with me to February 2018.

It’s Super Bowl Sunday. Your friends are coming over for the big game, you’ve got the pre-shows on while vacuuming the living room. Pizzas will be arriving soon. Kickoff’s in a little bit.

Who’s playing?

Of course the Patriots. Bleh, forget those guys. They’re here every year. Went 13-3 in the regular season, Belichick never sounded happy about it, waltzed through the playoffs (well, the Steelers gave them a run for their money in the AFC Championship, but of course, Brady weapon number 145 came down with that one catch they won’t stop playing on ESPN).

The other team? Continue reading

By: Griffin Houlihan

Young, Fast and Physical

Now, I’m not here to tell you the 2017 Falcons defense is going to be an all-time great, but I am here to tell you that the 2017 Falcons defense will be much improved, and one of the most exciting defenses in the league in 2017. Continue reading

How to Cope with the Falcons Super Bowl Loss on 3-28

By Cory Woodroof

It’s time to talk about it.

You’ve seen the memes. You’ve heard the jokes. You watched the game. You’ve cried your tears, felt your numbness, thrown your fits, asked your “What Ifs?” and have replayed the fourth quarter in your head a million times, tagging on a new ending each time.

Let’s finally … once and for all … talk about it.

The Atlanta Falcons … our Atlanta Falcons … blew a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl.

Ouch. It hurts to type. Continue reading

Episode 5: A New Hope—Rise Up Reader Podcast

This week, see if Michael and Cory can dig themselves out of the deep, dark abyss of depression that was the Falcons’ devastating and unfathomable Super Bowl loss. They’ll talk through their free agency wish lists, pretending the agonizing pain of blowing a 25-point lead in the Super Bowl isn’t still staring them in the face (at least for Michael it is). The two will do their best to provide you with some hope going into next season, break down the latest coaching changes, and Cory struggles with some unwanted gas (no context needed). Enjoy!

Only a Day Away: Three Reasons these Falcons Will Be Back in 2017

By Cory Woodroof

Hi.

We haven’t chatted since, well, y’know.

Look, I’m not going to sugar coat it for you. We lost the Super Bowl in heartbreaking fashion, and there ain’t no fixing it. It’s over, done, kaput.

But, as badly as Sunday’s flap burns a hole in our red and black hearts, the future is incredibly bright for this organization. And, that’s not a vapid attempt at blatant optimism – there are bountiful reasons to be excited about the future of this franchise. Seriously! We’re not lying! You can stop crying now!
